Developing the Eco-Conscious

The article in last Sunday’s New York Times Magazine exploring the presence of an “Ecological Unconscious” supports the contention made throughout this EgoEcosystem blog… that there must be better motivations to protect the environment than threat of penalties and the potential to horde resources.

I will be reaching out over the next few weeks to the experts whom the article references; I’ll let you know what I learn. I hope it is a lot.

You might also ask, “What would anybody do with expertise in the realm of tapping into an eco consciousness?” Well, I can see it driving a new type of eco-tourism which would generate more value than driving through a rain forest or diving on a secluded reef. I can see spas promoting rejuvenation by tapping into all the ecologic links in a region, not just a sounds-of-nature CD. And I can see developers creating communities of higher value by respecting, restoring and supporting links with the local ecology from every site they build on… and preventing other developers from destroying them at a later time. I see that further study into the hoped-for ecological unconscious may even define a path to create a critical mass of humanity that would care enough to actually change the way we conduct business, treat our neighbors, and support our communities.

This excites me. Maybe its just because I finally found others who I can learn from and consult with to make my dreams a reality.
